   THE WARD BRIDAL QUILT

James Ward, MD was a favorite Pediatrician in Mount Pleasant.  He and his wife Louise were early members of Cobblestone.  Dr. Ward proudly displayed the original quilt during several Cobblestone meetings and shared its history.  His grandmother and grandfather received the original quilt for their wedding in 1856.  Because of his love for his wife, his grandfather carried the quilt with him throughout the Civil War.  In the 1990's, Louise Ward passed away.  In her honor, the Guild was given permission to develop a pattern from the original quilt.

For the 2024 Cobblestone Quilt Show, the Quilt Show Committee decided to have this quilt represent the Quilt Show because of its history and beauty.  The nine 24" x 24" blocks were appliqued by seven current members:  Kim McPeake, Linda Knutsen, Virginia Schrenker, Kristin Pritchett, Rose Bernard, Chris Taylor and Linda Ambrose.  The original pattern was modified slightly:  instead of solid fabrics, the flowers were made with a beautiful red paisley material by Three Sisters/Moda, the green stems and leaves are from a two color woven green fabric and the background is a tone on tone white with a subtle floral pattern.  The border was simplified to a single flying geese pattern.  The exquisite quilting was designed and custom sewn by Karen Kendo.

Raffle tickets are $1 each.  Tickets are available starting on May 13, 2023.  The winner will be announced on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 3 p.m. at our Celebration of Quilts at the North Charleston Athletic Center.
